The Proctors have been extremely hard to trace. According to a hand written note from my great aunt, Mary Ann Southern, nee Proctor, was born in 1817, the daughter of Andrew Proctor (b. 1777). Both of these facts are confirmed by her marriage certificate. It seems that the Proctors were Glasites, followers of John Glas' breakaway church, the archives of which are held by Dundee University and moreover there is consisderable evidence that the early Proctors came from Dundee and settled in an area of Newcastle popular with Scottish emigres.
